HERBS, ESSENTIAL OILS, AND HOMEOPATHICS, FOR
PUBERTY, THE CHILDBEARING YEARS, AND MENOPAUSE

Healthy pregnancies, of course, begin with the habits that are formed in adolescence.

PUBERTY

Puberty is a time of emerging hormones and can be a time of raging and less-than-balanced hormones. In some ways these stage of life can be a sort of return to the “terrible twos” with a great deal more autonomy thrown in. Behavior may include mood swings—calm and cooperative to angry and annoyed, sometimes rebellious and sassy, other times weepy and over-sensitive.

During this time of changing hormones it is very important that a young woman pay very close attention to her diet for several very good reasons. Habits formed here and hormonal patterns established at this time will very likely play a major role in the ease, or the difficulty, experienced during the childbearing years.

GALLBALADDER, LIVER, ZITS, AND FAT

If a young woman does not seem to understand the importance of today on the tomorrows of her childbearing years, it might be helpful to impress upon her mind the connection between a healthy gallbladder and liver and breaking out with zits on her face. Many young women, once they understand that fried foods, junk foods, and a general lack of nutrients plays a large role in keeping her skin clear because of the effect they have on the gallbladder and liver. It is also sometimes helpful to point out that a compromised or sluggish gallbladder also causes fats to accumulate in the bloodstream and in the tissues and no young woman wants excess fat hanging around!

REMEDIES FOR THIS STAGE:

ESSENTIAL OILS:

LeAcknowledge—liver health but pleasant enough for a young woman to use as a perfume
LeAngel—-anger issues, especially tied to trauma or abuse from childhood
LeBelieve—build confidence in oneself; confidence to make right choice
LeConnection—many oils with an affinity for the pelvic regions and for hormone balance
LeLetting Go—the emotions are just what you would expect from the name but this blend also benefits the gall bladder, which needs it at this critical stage
LeEndoRelief—overall endocrine system balance and health
LeMillenia—easy way to do all meridians at once; courage, self-confidence, calm
LeUnity—all meridians and chakras; quarrelsomeness; touchy feelings
LeVitality or LeSolitude for vein health and circulation
Orange Sweet, and anything it is in, is a wonderful oil for this stage of life and any other

HERBS:

It is a good time to start on the YW tincture formula, making it a part of your life any time a few symptoms of hormone imbalances begine to appear. I would have every young woman taking KNA or the MIN herbal formulas to cover nutritional needs for vitamins and minerals that may be missing.

THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE

HOMORNES

Many things, in nature and in our health, operate in cycles. It is perfectly natural to feel the waxing and waning of energy and emotions throughout the lunar month. It is NOT natural to be PMS-y. Instead of cussing our hormones, we should learn all we can about them and what is necessary to keep them balanced. Hormone imbalances affect emotions and bring about many problems such as irregular, painful or heavy periods, PMS, and, eventually, fertility and menopausal problems. On the other hand, balanced hormones produce in us boundless energy and allow us to enjoy feelings of compassion for others and personal well-being.

The B vitamins and vitamin C are particularly important to hormone balance as are trace minerals and essential fatty acids.

HORMONE IMBALANCES ARE AFTEN CAUSED BY OR RELATED TO:

hereditary factors
seems to run in families
(heredity or nutritional habits)
low thyroid function or a sluggish liver
deficiencies of essential fatty acids
deficiencies of B vitamins, or vitamin C
deficiencies of trace minerals
such as magnesium, zinc, chromium, calcium
stress and emotional issues
too much of the wrong kind of salt
constipation, digestive issues
consumption of alcohol or caffeine
too much sugar and refined carbohydrates

MISCARRIAGE AND THE PREVENTION OF MISCARRIAGE

Miscarriage is far more common than is generally supposed. It is estimated by some in the medical community that 1 in 2 very early pregnancies miscarry, often appearing to have been only a delayed or extra heavy period. It is also claimed that 1 in 6 women who have a positive pregnancy test and carry longer into the pregnancy will suffer a miscarriage. These statistics seem a little high, based on my experience as a midwife. It is also estimated that with proper care and the use of natural remedies, over half of “threatened miscarriages” can be successfully brought to a full term. Perhaps I find the statistic of 1 in 6 miscarriage high because so many times we see women carry a threatened miscarriage to a successful completion.

Some women have spotting or even light periods regularly throughout their pregnancies. This does not necessarily indicate an impending miscarriage, although it is always cause for concern. Whenever there is bleeding during a pregnancy, especially if it is accompanied by cramping or softening of the cervix, corrective measures should be taken immediately and the woman should spend as much time lying down as the situation warrants. Basically, this means that after the first day or two of bed rest, the woman should remain on bed rest if moving about increases bleeding until the bleeding has stopped.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

The essential oil LeMillenia is useful to tighten the uterus and cervix, realign everything structurally and energetically, LeHeartSong and LeWhispering Hope can help quite a bit for the emotional loss should a pregnancy not carry to term.

HERBS:

If the pregnancy is in the first 6 weeks when bleeding occurs, false unicorn and lobelia should be taken. The ratio should be 3 parts false unicorn to 1 part lobelia. This combination taken as soon as spotting begins has saved many pregnancies. There is a protective nest inside the ovary where the ovum, called the corpus luteum, fails to mature promptly after the egg has left the nest and been fertilized. If it does not move on to its next stage of development properly and produce the hormones for which it is responsible, necessary hormones which signal the zygote (soon to be baby) to implant in the uterine wall are not produced. Since no implantation has taken place, the uterus empties and a miscarriage occurs. False unicorn with lobelia encourages production of these hormones and the baby is able to implant.

Other herbs to consider include chaste tree, cramp bark, black haw, wild yam, and raspberry leaves.

HOMEOPATHICS:

Bach flower remedies rock rose or mimulus may help with the emotional pain while rescue remedy will work with shock, bleeding, and the emotional state of the mother.

Other homeopathic remedies to consider: Aconitum napellus, Arnica montana, Arsenicum album, Bryonia alba, Caulophyllum, China officinalis (Cinchona), Cimicifuga raceosa, Ferrum phosporicum, Gelsemium sempervirens, Ignatia amara, Ipecacuanha, Pulsatilla nigricans, Rhus toxicodendron, Ruta gravolens, Sabina officinalis, Secale cornutum, Sepia succus, Viburnum oppulus

The homeopathics used for the various stages of miscarriage are treated in more depth in the book Butterfly Miracles with Homeopathic Remedies, II, Chapter Four

LABOR AND DELIVERY Labor and delivery is, of course, a topic that in order to cover properly would require its own book. The following is merely a list of the most commonly used remedies during labor and delivery with a little bit of information to guide your choice—or your further education.

HERBS:

FSW (Five/six Week Formula) aids in preparing mother and baby for the upcoming birth. This formula really does make a significant difference to the length and intensity of labor. My experience with this formula is that it often focuses the contractions in a downward and more productive direction. This focus makes the labor more intense but actually less painful. With properly focused contractions (unlike the all-around-the-belly contractions produced by pitocin) the baby is more likely to line up properly. Proper alignment allows the head to mold as it should. A properly molded head reduces the circumference to be delivered through the cervix and across the perineum by at least a centimeter or more. This can make a great deal of difference to the length of the pushing stage and makes it much easier to deliver the baby without any damage to the perineum. Ginger baths relax tired, overworked or sore muscles. A ginger bath will relax away Braxton-Hicks contractions during the last weeks of a pregnancy. It does this by increasing oxygen to the uterus. A ginger bath will increase labor at term if everything is ready to go or if the labor has slowed down due to maternal fatigue or tension. When in doubt about rather the contractions being felt are the real thing or just more Braxton-Hicks contractions, putting the mother into a ginger tub will clarify the situation. If Braxton-Hicks, they will be relaxed away; if real, labor will pick up immediately. Aconitum napellus is the number one homeopathic remedy for trauma, emergency, and first-aid—especially during birth. It is especially effective when labor has begun early with the baby not ready to be born and the labor is proceeding very quickly and quite violently. Often the labor was triggered by fright or emotional trauma of some kind. Bleeding (during labor):

HERBS:

More and better absorbed calcium is what is needed. (See list above for menopause.)

HOMEOPATHICS:

Tissue (cell) salts, especially kalis and calcareas, Calcarea phosphoricum, Bufo rana

ESSENTIAL OILS:

Osteoporosis is considered a disease related to calcium absorption; more properly understood as beginning with hormone imbalance—consider all the oils and herbs listed above for menopause. LeEndoRelief and LeBalance should help a lot with the hormonal underpinnings of this condition. LeEternity and LeWarmDown aid calcium absorption; LeDeeer, LePaine, LeTranquility, birch, chamomile German, chamomile Roman, hyssop, lemon, nutmeg, pine, spruce, rosemary, wintergreen—dilute and use as a massage oil or put 2 - 3 drops in the tub; rub on feet. A hormone produced in the parathyroid glands plays a key role in regulating the calcium and potassium levels in the body. The reasons for low parathyroid function if there is no abnormal growth or tumor present, are not well understood by medical science at this time. If there is insufficient calcium rich foods (or herbs) in the diet, or if uptake of calcium is impaired for some reason and calcium levels in the body fall too low, the parathyroids secrete a hormone which releases calcium from the bones to raise the level in the bloodstream. Of course, too much calcium pulled from the bones results in osteoporosis and th hip fractures that are common among the elderly. This condition can exist at any time in a person’s life, not just with advancing age.

All essential oil blends and herbal formulations spoken of here are sold by Butterfly Express, LLC and referenced in the series of books, Butterfly Miracles by LaRee Westover, specifically Butterfly Miracles with Essential Oils and Butterfly Miracles with Herbal Remedies. Energetic remedies similar to homeopathic remedies called "Blessed Waters" may also be purchased at Butterfly Express. Similar herbal and homeopathic preparations may be purchased elsewhere, of course, and there are many essential oils on the market. These formulas, especially the essential oils ones, are my “babies”. I created theM and they are what I know and teach best.

The subject of homeopathics for pregnancy, childbirth, nursing and infant care is treated in more depth in the book Butterfly Miracles with Homeopathic Remedies. In this book, distinctions between the actions of various homeopathics for specific conditions is explained.
