Utah Foot Zone Law Update
Dear Foot Zone Enthusiast:
At our seminar in October, I informed you that the legislature had exempted foot zone therapists from licensure under the Massage Therapy Practices Act so long as you are certified by and a member in good standing of an industry organization recognized by the State. I promised to keep you informed about the progress of DOPL, the state licensing agency charged with implementing the exemption, as they determine how to implement the exemption the legislature has created.

I have been concerned by false representations by certain organizations claiming that they have been recognized by the State of Utah as a recognized foot zone trade organization who could protect your right to practice foot zone therapy in Utah.

I checked into those claims and have the following facts to report.

On November 3, 2014, DOPL published a proposed rule which, if adopted, would have recognized two organizations whose members meet the exemption requirements of the statute. LaRee's organization, Butterfly Miracles with Foot Zone Therapy was not on that list. We are confident that was mere oversight by the State who were unaware of her existence.

Today I, with LaRee Westover, attended a hearing before DOPL in which the proposed rule was discussed, and we requested that LaRee's organization be included as a recognized industry organization. We gave them a short history of LaRee and her organization, and talked about the need for an organization, like hers, having a 17 year history being recognized by the State.

The board was very professional and asked several pertinent questions which LaRee fielded well.

At the end of the hearing, the Board tabled the rule until their next meeting which will be held in a couple of months. In the meantime no organization is authorized by the State of Utah to represent that it has the ability to qualify anyone to practice foot zone therapy. Before that can happen, a new rule will need to be proposed. For now it is still legal to perform foot zone therapy in Utah without being a member of any organization. We look forward to helping the State grapple with this problem, and are confident that when a new rule is proposed, a well-established foot zone school like LaRee's will be on the list.

I will keep you posted.

Health Tip: Peppermint - the Herb
Like many other stimulant herbs, peppermint is relaxing in small quantities and stimulating as the dosage or potency is increased. Quietly sipping a small amount of mild peppermint tea calms the nerves and yet peppermint as an essential oil is used as a stimulant to keep yourself awake.

Never boil or over-heat the herb when making tea. The medicinal properties are extremely volatile and evaporate easily. Water that is just slightly hotter than lukewarm is ideal for any of the mints when making a cup of tea.

Peppermint can also act as a nervine. It can strengthen both the heart and the digestive system. Peppermint acts as an anti-spasmodic nervine in helping to release nerve tension built up in muscles. Peppermint dulls the hyper-contracting stated of the smooth intestinal muscles and is often of benefit in the treatment of many digestive upsets including irritable bowel syndrome, colic and diarrhea.

A nice peppermint tea is also beneficial for fevers. It helps both with the hydration necessary during a fever as well as providing relief from the fever itself.

Peppermint is high in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iron, selenium, manganese, vitamin C, silicon and zinc.

This winter, treat yourself to a soothing cup of peppermint tea. You will be doing more than warming yourself up!

Principle Oils of the Bible
Proverbs 21:20 states, There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise and Proverbs 27:9 tells us, Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart. Another passage from Mark 6:13 says, they anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

The Bible contains over 600 references to aromatic plants and the essential oils from which they are extracted. The following is a list of a few of the major oils mentioned most frequently.

MYRRH AND FRANKINCENSE:
Matthew 2:11 - And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

CEDARWOOD
Leviticus 14:52 -And with the cedarwood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet. (referring to the cleansing of lepers)

CINNAMON, CASSIA, CALAMUS
Exodus 30:22 - 25 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take thou also unto thee principal spices of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, and of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment.

GALBANUM AND BENZOIN (ONYCHA)
Exodus 30:34 - And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy.

SPIKENARD
John 12:3 - Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

HYSSOP
Psalm 51:6 -Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean: wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

SANDALWOOD (ALOES)
John 19:39 - And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

In Genesis 1:11, the Bible tells us that God created the plants for our use. Likewise, the essential oils that these plants produce can serve many of the same purposes that the plants themselves do. Essential oils can help to balance the many systems of the body, including the endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous and reproductive systems. They can help us to metabolize and absorb our nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

They can help us boost our immune systems so that we are able to stay well instead of getting sick, fighting off diseases with our own natural defenses rather than falling prey to bacteria and viruses.

During this holiday season let us give thanks for these wonderful, Divinely inspired essential oils that provide so much health and goodness in our lives.
