Maintaining Your Health With Megan: Depression

LeAngel

AROMATIC CONSIDERATIONS: Use of this blend often brings memories of a time or place when one felt safe and loved. Often the person will wish to express these feelings or talk about a loved one from their past with whom they felt particularly loved, accepted, and safe.

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS: LeAngel is specific for use in releasing traumatic memories connected to negative experiences of various kinds. It is particularly effective for feelings of insecurity, helplessness, and rage resulting from childhood abuse, both sexual and otherwise. Adults who were abused as children often feel confusion, anger at themselves, and misplaced guilt because "they let it happen". LeAngel can bring them to a place of safety where they can acknowledge these feelings and sort through them. The releasing and processing of these memories has a cleansing effect on the stored anger that is often held in the liver meridian. LeAngel does not erase the memory of these events. It allows one to move through the anger, validate themselves, let go, and move forward rather than let past experiences dictate their actions and their decisions in the present.

LeReflections

AROMATIC CONSIDERATIONS: Diffused, can help lift the cloud of negativity which may be pulling us under emotionally and spiritually and clouding our mental perceptions and processes.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS: The kidneys have been given the vital task of collecting and disposing of the waste products from cellular metabolism. The kidneys also regulate the balance of fluids throughout our bodies. The accumulation of waste material in cells and joints contributes to such conditions as arthritis, muscle pain, nephritis, kidney stones, and neuralgia - to name just a few. Urinary infections and inflammation in the bladder often occur during times of stress, particularly relationship stresses. The kidneys are also involved with the production of red blood cells affecting energy levels and our ability to give and receive love.

Elemi

GENERAL INFORMATION: Elemi is known throughout the world as "poor man's frankincense." It has somewhat similar properties and uses as frankincense. See the section on frankincense for additional uses.

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS: Elemi lifts the spirits and provides the energy and desire to seek out better things and more uplifting experiences. The aroma of elemi encourages compassion and a desire for going beyond the ordinary in serving others.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS: Elemi makes a wonderful addition to blends intended for skin care and rejuvenation. Elemi can be used to treat allergic rashes, chapped skin, skin ulcers, and wounds. It is particularly recommended for cuts that have become infected. Elemi has a reputation for being effective in the treatment of gangrene and breast and uterine infections. Elemi has a rebuilding and strengthening effect on respiratory weakness. Elemi may be of use to people who suffer from chronic bronchitis. This essential oil, like frankincense, is recommended for bronchial or sinus infections.

Ginger CO2

GENERAL INFORMATION: Ginger root is a perennial herb that grows 3 - 4 feet high. The root or tuberous rhizome is the part of the plant used. Using CO-2 to extract this essential oil yields a greater number of aromatic compounds than when it is distilled using steam distillation. Under certain conditions at very low temperatures carbon dioxide (CO-2) can be pressurized to become a liquid. This cold, liquid carbon dioxide acts as a "solvent" and can be used to extract the essential oil components from the root material. Once the essential oil extraction has been completed, the extraction vessel is brought back to normal temperature and the CO-2 rapidly coverts to gas, leaving behind a high quality oil that is free of solvents.

Kanuka

PHYSICAL ASPECTS: Kanuka contains a cluster of five sesquiterpine compounds, all of which have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Kanuka is effective for joint and muscle pain, including that of rheumatoid arthritis. Kanuka's anti-inflammatory properties seem to be particularly effective for ear, nose, and throat inflammations and infections and for the treatment of certain types of migraine headaches. Kanuka is also used in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, rashes, and insect bites. Kanuka is said to be an insect repellent.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Kanuka is a fairly new essential oil from Tasmania. A Tasmanian farmer, John Hood, noticed that the steel wire fence that had this strange plant growing near it was not rusting out like other fences on his property. This observation led to years of investigation and trials of the essential oil that is distilled from this plant. Kunzea (Kunzea ambigua) and kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) seem to be very similar in both aroma and therapeutic properties.

(Jasminum grandiflorum)

EMOTIONAL / SPIRITUAL / MENTAL ASPECTS: Jasmine is good for women who want to find and utilize their strength of character and purpose without losing their feminine side. It is appropriate for men who want to find and utilize their strength of character and purpose while developing their sensitivity and caring. Historically and in many religious traditions, jasmine flowers symbolize hope, happiness, and love.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS: Because of its powerful effect on the emotions and hormones, jasmine is often effective for a very long list of physical, mental, and emotional disorders.

Jasmine, either as a single or as an ingredient in a blend, is often used for hormone balancing, menstrual cramps, and PMS. Jasmine is used during childbirth to strengthen the contractions, and at the same time, ease the intensity of the pain.

Jasmine is excellent in skin care products because it increases elasticity. It is often used to prevent or minimize stretch marks. Consistent use of jasmine essential oil can reduce scarring.

Walnut Oil

Walnut is very high in linoleic acid and antioxidants. It is used to repair damaged or dry skin and to prevent wrinkles. It is best used as less than 15% of a carrier oil composite blend. Walnut oil contains an anti-oxidant, ellagic acid, which research—still in early stages—is reporting and showing an ability to detoxify several compounds that have been linked to the development of certain types of cancers. High anti-oxidant concentrations have been shown to help fight the signs of aging as well.

Walnut oil, when taken internally (why not just eat walnuts?) creates an increase in the strength and resilience of blood vessels and improves circulation. It accomplishes this by preserving the function of the endothelial cells which line the walls of the blood vessels. This reduces hardening of the artery walls. Hardening of the arteries is considered a major contributor to high blood pressure and heart disease.

Walnut oil has a short shelf life and must be kept refrigerated and stored with a tight lid. Walnut oil is certainly not recommended for persons with a nut allergy of any sort without extreme care and caution.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa has been in use as a “miracle herb” for centuries; the Arabs call it the “Father of Herbs.” Alfalfa is thought to contain the widest variety of vitamins and minerals of any other food on earth, and the rich supply of chlorophyll makes it perfectly balanced for absorption by the body.

Among the nutrients that Alfalfa contains are vitamin A, most of those very important B vitamins including folic acid, vitamins C, D, E, F, and K. Important minerals found in Alfalfa include iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine, selenium, sodium, potassium, silicon, zinc, and many of the trace elements.

There have been studies that show that the specific nutrients in Alfalfa “bind” chromium and make it more readily available to cells. Chromium is necessary for the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, activates several enzymes, improves glucose tolerance and blood sugar levels, and promotes lean muscle growth.

Alfalfa contains some wonderful proteins—a rather rare thing in the herbal world—and eight of the amino acids that are essential to the body. Whatever Alfalfa lacks can be made up for by using it with Kelp and Nettles—the KNA formula that is my favorite supplement. Perhaps Alfalfa should be considered more of a “food” than a medicinal herb and, perhaps, if Alfalfa were taken regularly there would be less need for medicine.

Depression

By Megan Westover

Depression is the persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest. It may include anger, tiredness, irritability, and changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, appetite, and concentration. Depression is so common, and felt by everyone during parts of our lives to some degree, that it may be difficult to diagnose, but major depression is when these symptoms do not go away for extended periods of time. Sometimes feeling worthless and miserable happens because our body isn't balanced hormonally. Sometimes something has happened to us to make us feel this way; such as the death of a loved one or divorce. Whether we notice the symptoms as depression, or not, it is not a place we want to stay.

The delicate cycle of depression can be very hard to break. The more depressed you get, the less you want to do, and the less you do, the more depressed you feel. Depression can distort your perspective as to who you are, and weaken your focus as to where you want to go.

Picture a relentless storm on the sea. You are the boat, being tossed on the waves. You are not stable, but always struggling, and about to sink. The boat has no direction or harbor of safety but is always struggling to stay afloat. The waves are always crashing, and there is no rest. Those of you who are depressed know about this fight.

There are several different kinds of depression, but each one is just a different wind of the same storm.

Not treating depression can be dangerous. It can lead to drug or alcohol addiction, ruin relationships, cause problems at work, and even result in suicide. Because clinical depression affects your mood, your body, and how you think, life becomes much harder without treatment. Also realize that once in this downward spiral, it is not just a matter of pulling ourselves out. We need to fix the causes before we are even going to feel like helping ourselves.

Some of the best-recommended help for depression are LeHeartSong, LeWhispering Hope, and LeAcknowledge essential oils. There is an extensive list of oils in "Butterfly Miracles with Essential Oils" that can help with depression, depending on the symptoms and situation of the different depressions. LeCherish is very helpful when dealing with the loss of a loved one. Getting some exercise is also beneficial because it releases endorphins in your body which always make us happier. Sometimes depression is caused because of poor nutrition. The nerves simply do not have the resources to function properly. Herbal tinctures may be helpful along with the essential oils. Tinctures such as NV, NS, NT, NVC, BBL and others provide some vitamins and minerals to help treat depression. St. John's Wort may be helpful as well. Once again, there is a list of other useful herbs in the book "Butterfly Miracles with Herbal Remedies."

Exercise, friends, and getting rid of your pride helps. Believe it or not, humility is the antidote to depression.

When a ship gets tied to the dock, there are ropes on the front and back that keep the ship from floating away, and two spring lines that come at an angle to pull the ship. Liken the spring lines to the ritual of our daily lives, stabilizing us in our lives today. They hold us to the dock of our daily routine, and keep us from blowing out to sea. Things like taking care of kids, going to work on time, cooking, cleaning, and whatever you have to do every day to be a useful person. They are the here and now. The stern line in the back is the list of accomplishments in our past and things we have overcome. The bow line in the front is where we are going. Our goals and desires we've yet to achieve. Although the storm rages on, when you come into the dock the ropes can hold you securely in your place. You are tied safely because the lines secure the ship. You know where you've been, where you're going, and how to stay afloat today.

Trying to weather the storm by ourselves is nearly impossible. Once you dock your boat and tie it securely with tight ropes of vision, then the path may become clearer. Herbs and oils are such a big help. When you're caught in the storm remember, this too shall pass. Live in this moment and make the most out of it.
