HEALTH TIP:
Cascara Sagrada

Cascara sagrada is a wonderful herb, most helpful in creating peristaltic contractions within the intestinal tract. This herb is very useful for helping to alleviate constipation. It helps to restore proper bowel function, without cramping, as in non-habit forming (as are so many chemical laxatives). Cascara is also anthilitic and lithotriptic. This means that it works to prevent the formation of gravel and stones in the gall bladder and kidneys.

Herbally, juniper berries are very good at cleansing the pancreas and keeping it functioning optimally. They are a stimulating and diuretic herb, helping to support the kidneys and bladder as well as uric acid toxicity.

Together, these herbs are a great cleanser and support for the pancreas.

Caution with juniper berries is advised during pregnancy as they are a mild uterine stimulant.

The Controversy Over Sunscreen
By Sharon Moran

Most commercially available sunscreens have toxic ingredients. Some of these ingredients can also upset the hormonal balance of the endocrine system. In many cases these sunscreens, used to help prevent skin cancer, actually show an increase in free radical production in the body as well as a rise in the incidence of skin cancer. In 2007 the FDA issued to following statement: "The FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer." In the years following the rise in sunscreen use, there has been a corresponding rise in skin cancer!

Two of the most widely used chemicals in commercially prepared sunscreens are retinyl palmitate (retinol) and oxybenzone. According to the Environmental Working Group, retinol is found in 25% of all sunscreens. It can actually accelerate the development of skin lesions and tumors on skin which has been exposed to sunlight. Ixybenzone is found over half of all sunscreens. It soaks through the skin, into the blood and can trigger allergic skin reactions. It may also be a hormone disruptor.

Vitamin D is a very important part of the body's natural defense against cancer. The increased use of sunscreens seems to also correlate with an increase in the number of people who are vitamin D deficient. The actual lack of sun exposure may, in fact, be contributing to skin cancer. Low vitamin D levels in the body have also been linked to the most deadly types of breast cancer.

You need to develop your own approach to sun exposure. Since most of us work inside these days, it can actually take some planning to get adequate sun exposure. However, you will want to limit your amount of time in the sun WITHOUT getting to the point of burning. In the event that your outside activity is longer than you want your skin exposed, it is relatively easy to just put on a hat and a shirt to protect your face and arms.

There are many products available in the natural arena which offer some protection for you skin from the sun. Solid coconut oil measures around SPF 4, while shea butter may come in a little bit higher at SPF 5. Combining just these two ingredients into a formulation for the skin would offer some natural, non-cancer inducing, skin protection. Other ingredients which would help protect as well as nourish the skin would be beeswax, vitamin E oil, jojoba oil, argon oil and black cumin seed oil.

Zinc oxide is a mineral powder used in natural sunscreens and has an SPF of around 20 or higher. It can be added into liquid ingredients to create a physical barrier rather than a chemical barrier on the skin. The non-nano version of this mineral is of sufficient size to not be absorbed into the skin. It actually stays on the skin to diffuse the UV rays. (This is a powdered product and SHOULD NOT be inhaled! Mixed into the liquid portion of a natural sunscreen recipe zinc oxide provides a very good sun blocking barrier.)

Here's an interesting fact: SPF 20 sunscreen blocks about 94% of the UVB rays of the sun. SPF 40 sunscreen does NOT block twice as much. It blocks around 98% of the UVB rays.

A simple google search for homemade sunscreens will provide you with many recipes. The process for making sunscreens is not involved or complicated. It is quite economical and certainly better for you. Why not give it a try this summer and save your skin.

Citronella Java

(Cucuma longa)

INGREDIENT IN: LeAway, LePurify, LeSunburst

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES: antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, deodorant, insecticidal, antiparasitic, stimulant

PHYSICAL ASPECTS: Citronella can be used safely as an antiseptic to sanitize and deodorize surfaces being used in food preparation. Citronella, diluted with a carrier oil, makes a refreshing massage therapy oil. The citronella oils are used for colds, flu, fatigue, headaches, migraines, and neuralgia. They are also good for balancing excessive perspiration and excessive oiliness of skin and hair.

GENERAL INFORMATION: These two oils belong to the same family as lemongrass and palmarosa, and are similar in their therapeutic uses. Most literature does not distinguish between the citronella ceylon and citronella java. MS (mass spectrograph) readouts reveal some interesting differences, however. Java has a much higher percentage of citronella. This is the component most responsible for the lemony aroma and is also responsible for the insect repellent properties of citronella oils. Java has a lower percentage of geraniol than the ceylon variety. Geraniol is an ingredient which is suspected of attracting certain kinds of bees?not a good attribute for an insect repellent! Obviously, java makes the best insect repellent, but both varieties are often combined with cedarwood to make insecticides and insect repellents. Ceylon is probably used because it is less expensive than java.

CAUTIONS: Too frequent use of citronella on the skin can cause contact sensitization and irritation. Citronella should be used with caution during pregnancy.
