Acherontia atropos
(Death’s Head Hawkmoth)
There are some outstanding similarities between this moth’s life cycle and the symptoms shown in the provings and the symptoms that were ameliorated by this remedy when used in treatment protocols.
AFFILIATIONS: (Pirates) Provers of this remedy mentioned that their dreams were filled with pirates and pirate themes. Children who responded well to this remedy had a marked love of pirates, particularly dressing up in pirate costumes. This is very interesting because there are distinguishable skull markings visible both on the caterpillar and on the moth. (Bees and Honey) This large moth loves honey and will raid beehives to get it. This remedy has proven useful for allergic reactions to bee stings
FOOD: Provers or persons benefited by this remedy either had or developed extraordinary love of and craving for sweets, particularly honey! Butterfly remedies, with a couple of exceptions, crave sweets. This remedy has a special affinity for honey. (see above) ADHD/Hyperactivity/Learning—very restless children with mercurial temperaments; agitation; the need to be moving and to have others moving and getting things done—even manifested in dreams; difficulty concentrating—having to ask questions more than once; obsessed with details; great happiness, with a feeling of mental release;
ABANDONMENT/LACK OF LIMITS: There are the usual butterfly issues of abandonment and lack of limits; hiding—this caterpillar burrows down into the earth for its chrysalis stage, hiding in much the same way that a person needing this remedy would hide if only they could do it (hiding away, becoming a hermit); dreams of troubles and of being abandoned to take care of the problems all by themselves
EMOTIONAL: Loss of self-confidence; feels a continual need to purchase pretty and colorful things; in spite of all the negative sensations listed above, provers described an overall sense of happiness, with a feeling of freedom and liberation.
PHYSCAL/GENERAL: Hives, eczema, angioedema (localized swelling, usually on the face, neck, hands, feet, genitalia, and deep tissues of the viscera); itchy, swollen eyelids; tendency to ailments of the respiratory tracts such as bronchitis.
SENSITIVITIES: Feelings of suffocation—interesting to note that these moths often die by suffocation by irate bees during raids on beehives; severe allergic reactions to bites, stings, and vaccinations; feelings of being trapped; dreams of ‘fluttering’ against a window but cannot get out.
SLEEP: Deep sleep, but only for short periods of time; waking exhausted or with headaches; vivid dreams interrupting normal sleep patterns.
