Witch Hazel
EXTRACTION METHOD: Steam distillation, preserved with alcohol
CONSISTENCY: Clear, colorless- has a similar consistency to water
PART UTILIZED: Stems, Bark, Leaves
APPLICATION: Apply undiluted, topically on the skin. For best results apply to clean, dry skin followed by a hydrating moisturizer.
AROMATIC CONSIDERATIONS: Witch Hazel has a mild woody aroma.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Witch Hazel has been used to treat acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It has potent anti-inflammatory properties that relieve and soothe irritation. Its astringent qualities help shrink pores and reduce acne. Witch Hazel can also be added to shampoo to alleviate scalp issues such as dandruff, itching, and tenderness. It may be used as a cold compress or sprayed directly on sunburned skin to aid in healing. Witch Hazel has also been studied for its use in treating cold sores. The tannins in Witch Hazel exhibit antiviral effects and, when applied to cold sores, can help speed up the healing process. It promotes the healing of minor wounds, scrapes, and cuts. Witch Hazel is excellent for providing relief from bug bites, poison ivy, and poison oak.
Witch Hazel is made from the stem, bark, and leaves of the Witch Hazel plant (Hamamelis virginiana), a shrub native to North America. It has long been used by Native Americans and early settlers for a variety of medicinal and cosmetic purposes.
