Isodes of Cryptococcus neoformans, C. laurentii, and C. albidus. Cryptococcus is a genus of fungi found in soil worldwide, especially where there are a lot of bird droppings. Cryptococcus infection may cause pneumonia-like illness, with shortness of breath, cough, and fever. Some strains may cause central nervous system infection or inflammation with fever, headache, changes in mental state or memory loss.
